Construction for this project began in September, 2003 and includes full seismic and ADA upgrades. In addition to the seismic reinforcement, work included space programming, space layouts, workstation design, custom casework design, lighting and color coordination, and tenant improvements for the entire building (approximately 9,000 SF).

Mock/Wallace architects worked with City Staff and their consultants to provide building programming support, create city-wide systems furniture standards, and design a test floor at the current City Hall Annex. Mock/Wallace completed the furniture plan for the entire new Civic Center Tower  a 530,000 square foot facility. This project included design of systems furniture, freestanding desks, and re-use of existing free-standing furniture.

Building design architect is Richard Meier and Partners and The Steinberg Group are the tenant improvement architects.

Kenji Hasegawa Cabinet
In collaboration with master furniture maker Kenji Hasegawa, we designed this media center with a custom storage cabinet for a penthouse on Telegraph Hill.  The owner wanted something compatible with her Asian furniture that would contain an extensive DVD collection. Dark woods, aluminum panels and black glass give the cabinet a contemporary feeling compatible with the traditional Asian furniture.

In the thumbnails above the first is a preliminary concept drawing of the cabinet.  DVD and stereo equipment sit behind the black glass panels that allow remote controls to operate without opening the panels.

High overlooking San Francisco Bay this  new single family 3 bedroom, 3-1/2 bath home with additional au-pair quarters on the lower level replaces a home lost in the Oakland Hills fire. While open to the views,  there are intimate introspective spaces as well.   The design include collaboration with a noted feng-shui consultant to create a harmonious relationship with the earth, sky, and water.  Antique and new furniture was selected to compliment the new spaces.  The home is approximately 4,000 SF.

Damage from the Loma Prieta Earthquake of 1989 forced The Archdiocese of San Francisco to seek temporary housing for St. Mary’s Chinese School.  Mock/Wallace assisted in the search for a new site for the school.

The historic Our Lady of Guadalupe Church above the Broadway tunnel was vacant and available and we determined it would be suitable.  Given a new purpose as a temporary location for the School, the sanctuary and community room was converted into nine classrooms, offices, library and new toilets.  The historic interiors including the altar and chapels were preserved for a future restoration.   Work included seismic upgrade, historic preservation, and appearances before the SF Planning Commission and State Landmarks Board.

Civic Center, Palo Alto:  A major seismic upgrade to the 7 story tower provided the City with an opportunity to completely rethink the use of the building.  Mock/Wallace was retained to provide space planning service for the entire tower building and to develop the vacant 7th floor space into executive offices.  Mock/Wallace went on to provide interior design and  workstation design services for all seven floors of the building.
