Ever wonder how a disaabled person gets out of a multi-story building if they are unable to walk and you can't use the elevator?  This Stryker evacuation chair is installed in a stairwell at the Hall of Justice in San Francisco.  Many times an "area of refuge" is required in stairwells as well.  An area of refuge is where a disabled person can safely wait for help without blocking the exit of other people.   LM

A chair lift, when you can no longer climb stairs
I started writing about the difficulties of providing Universal Design in San Francisco, when I received a note from Ginger our Mock/Wallace Office Manager.  Ginger has a friend who now needs an accessible apartment - not easy to find in San Francisco.  Click the read more link below that tells what is needed.  If you know of a place, let us know and we will pass the word along.  This situation only emphasizes why Universal Design is needed and I'll write more about it another day.
