A Tale of Two Cities

Two cities, two airport terminals, both were completed at about the same time.  The San Francisco Internation Terminal completed in 2000  by the mighty architectural firm of SOM is probably the best building at the airport.   The play of light and structure  engages the eye and mind in a cool and intellectual way -- a detached but still satifying experience.

Contrast this with Madrid's Banarjas Airport.  I was totally unprepared for this discovery.  Where the San Francisco terminal is cool and intellectual, Madrid's airport is emotional, captivating and has a warm sensual feeling.  The use of steel, light, colors, and natural materials somehow manage to convey a real sense of welcome.  Welcome to Spain.
