Keep the Water Out

Pitch Pockets
There's nothing we like to see more than a roof top with no holes or penetrations - but life doesn't always cooperate.  Older buildings with brick parapet walls are often unstable and need reinforcement to prevent them from toppling over in an earthquake.  Reinforcing the parapet mean add a supporting brace, but that brace needs to be attached to something.  In this case it's attached to the roof deck which means the "waterproof" membrance is punctured.  The traditional solution is to form a sheet metal well surrounding the  penetration and filling it with "pitch" or another compound.  This works, but in time the compound may shrink or crack so regular inspection is needed.
